MIT: Flying car ready for takeoff

This summer, graduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are sucess to get an idea aloft that has intrigued people for decades: the flying car. "We have a lot of confidence that if the interest is there, we can deliver this product," Dietrich said. "There is a huge amount of general interest, but the question is, is there a market for it?" Power Generation-diesel Power

Introduction: Diesel Power station A Diesel power station(also known as Stand-by power station) uses a diesel engine as prime mover for the generation of electrical energy. This power sattion is generally compact and thus can be located where it is actually required. This kind of power station can be used to produce limited amounts of electrical energy. In most countries these power stations are used as emergency supply stations. Operation The diesel burns inside the engine and the combustion process causes rotational mechanical energy that turns the engine shaft and drives the alternator. The alternator inturn, converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. This type of electricity generating power station will probably be used a long time into the future, due to a need for reliable stand-by electrical source for emergency situations. Advantages v/s Disadvantages Advantages 1. Simple design & layout of plant 2. Occupies less space & is compact 3. Can be started quickly and...

The Ultimate Garbage Disposal

by Tony McNicol From the May 2007 A power station eats up dirty landfill and churns out clean electricity. Plasma turns garbage into gas that powers a turbine at a Japanese facility. Images courtesy of David Cyrano/Nature What could be better than a power station that eats up dirty landfill and churns out clean electricity? One facility in Utashinai, Japan, has been doing just that since 2003, using plasma—an electrically induced stream of hot, charged particles—to process up to 220 tons of municipal solid waste a day. Now a bigger and better $425 million plant is scheduled for completion by 2009 in Saint Lucie County, Florida. The operator, Atlanta-based Geoplasma, expects it to generate 160 megawatts of electricity—enough to power 36,000 homes—from a daily diet of trash. At the plant, garbage will be superheated to more than 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit—about the temperature of the sun’s surface—by a NASA-developed plasma torch. Organic components will be gasifed by the heat; the inorga...

Scientists develop portable generator that turns trash into electricity

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Tactical biorefinery A group of scientists have created a portable refinery that efficiently converts food, paper and plastic trash into electricity. The machine, designed for the U.S. military, would allow soldiers in the field to convert waste into power and could have widespread civilian applications in the future. "This is a very promising technology," said Michael Ladisch, the professor of agricultural and biological engineering at Purdue University who leads the project. "In a very short time it should be ready for use in the military, and I think it could be used outside the military shortly thereafter." The "tactical biorefinery" processes several kinds of waste at once, which it converts into fuel via two parallel processes. The system then burns the different fuels in a diesel engine to power a generator. Ladisch said the machine's ability to burn multiple fuels at once, along with its mobility, make it unique. Roughly ...

NEXT TO ELECTRICTY

Barry Bruce, 50 Biochemist University of Tennessee Everyone agrees that we need new ways to meet the energy demands of the future, but there's little consensus on how to do it. Nuclear fission? Cleaner coal? Bio-diesel? Barry Bruce is one of a small handful of researchers suggesting an entirely different road. Nature has its own incredibly efficient way of producing power from the sun--photosynthesis--so why not put it to work? "Essentially, you grow a power plant in a field or in a fermenter," says Bruce, an associate professor at the University of Tennessee's Center for Environmental Biotechnology. "You don't have to pay for it in any real way other than allowing photosynthesis to do what it's done for billions of years." Bruce and his colleagues poach particles from photosynthetic plants or bacteria and form them into so-called "nanoclusters" on small assemblages of metallic platinum. These photosystems produce very high-energy electrons...

Earthrise 1968

The late adventure photographer Galen Rowell called it “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken.” Captured on Christmas Eve, 1968, near the end of one of the most tumultuous years the U.S. had ever known, the Earthrise photograph inspired contemplation of our fragile existence and our place in the cosmos. For years, Frank Borman and Bill Anders of the Apollo 8 mission each thought that he was the one who took the picture. An investigation of two rolls of film seemed to prove Borman had taken an earlier, black-and-white frame, and the iconic color photograph, which later graced a U.S. postage stamp and several book covers, was by Anders.
